The podophyllin

The podophyllin is a topical drug. It is the sap extracted from plants such as Podophyllum peltatum and Podophyllum emodi, this sap is extracted podophyllotoxin and its congeners.

For its cytotoxic action is usually used for the treatment of viral warts, keratoses or skin cancer, but its use is higher for the treatment of condyloma aculminado, venereal warts caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV) that affects mainly the genitals of both sexes, perianal region, rectum, oral cavity, pharynx and larynx.

If used orally has a powerful laxative effect, can be toxic to the central nervous system and in pregnant women may be teratogenic. At high doses can be fatal. The podophyllin is prepared for topical use as a dye and is commonly used at a concentration of 25%, but this concentration may vary between 5% and 50%.

The application of podophyllin for injuries should be careful, should be avoided to the maximum contact of the substance with the skin healthy and musos, it can cause painful ulcerations. After applying the lesions should be washed after 6-8 hours.
